Kari Sjöstrand Quartet plays Bernt Rosengren
We Swedes have a strong musical culture historically. From Carl Michael Bellman, Evert Taube, Gerg Riedel, Cornelis Wreesvijk, Abba... the list can be made as long as you like.
In jazz music, Bernt Rosengren is undoubtedly one of the brightest stars. We have him in our DNA and Swedish jazz would not be what it is today without Bernt.
Rosengren was a great interpreter of other people's music. Personally and humbly, he took on our Swedish national heroes Evert Taube and Lars Gullin,
and then all American heroes like George Gershwin, Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter and many more.
In scores of fantastic arrangements, often for his own big band but also for small ensembles, and with his convincing playing and warm unmistakable tenor sax sound, he made the music his and ours.
Now it's our turn to highlight Bernt Rosengren to the world. Except in a few countries in Europe, such as Denmark and Poland, his music has not had such a wide spread internationally.
Even in Sweden, we have almost never heard anyone other than Bernt himself play his original songs that he wrote during a more than 60-year career. After his passing in 2023, it became very quiet. Now is the time to highlight this Swedish fashion treasure for listeners in the rest of Europe. It deserves it.
The group, which represents two generations including mother and son, is formed for this special project and all members have worked with Bernt and have a personal relationship which gives extra weight to the music.
